Intracavernous Pharmacotherapy

Intracavernous pharmacotherapy (ICP) has proven to be the most effective, reliable and safe way to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and PE (premature ejaculation) since it was first introduced in the early 1980s. ICP was the most common method for treating ED until the late ‘90s when mass-marketed ED pills became available. Although it isn’t a household name, ICP still remains popular to this day, especially with the 30% of men who aren’t helped by ED pills.

A study by the Mayo Clinic found ICP to be the best way for men with ED to achieve a hard erection that lasts. “…oral agents for the treatment of erectile dysfunction have been introduced over the last few years, but early reports of patient satisfaction and reproducibility of erectile rigidity have not matched those of intracavernosal [ICP] therapy.” ICP is popular amongst sex therapists and urologists because it poses no danger to men with heart conditions (unlike ED pills) and has fewer side effects as well.

How Does ICP Work?

In most cases ED is caused by the inability to get proper blood flow to the penis to create a rigid erection. ICP works by injecting FDA-approved liquid vasodilators into the spongy tissues of the penis which work to expand the veins and arteries, increase blood flow and allow it to become erect. ICP injections are administered by a painless shot from a pen-like applicator. After the injection, an erection should happen in about five to 20 minutes. Erections brought on by ICP feel just like natural erections although they do not subside after ejaculation but only after the medication has worn off.

How Effective is ICP?

A Study by the World Journal of Urology found ICP to be effective across the board no mater what the cause of the problem. “…erections were achieved in 97.2% of patients with neurogenic impotence [ED brought on by nerve problems], 81.6% of those with vascular impotence [blood flow problems] and 100% of patients with psychogenic [psychological ED] and hormonal impotence.”

Better Than the Little Blue Pill

A recent study by the International Journal of Impotence found that “Thirty percent of males afflicted with erectile dysfunction (ED) do not respond to oral drugs.” Although those little pills are getting most of the press, ICP has been proven to have a higher success rate. ICP is also widely more effective for elderly men between the ages of 63 and 85. A recent study by the International Journal of Impotence Research found that only 31% of elderly men receiving sildenafil (oral ED medications) achieve erection, as opposed to 73% using ICP.

Dude to its reliability, limited side effects and because it doesn’t interfere with other medications ICP is the preferred method of treatment of the Boston Medical Group. Make an appointment with a physician today to see if ICP is the right treatment for you!
